There are two main cameras in the Big Apple’s storeroom. Camera One looks down from above the two cash registers, framing the attendants and any customers at the counter. Single-serving chip bags and candies cover the front of the counter, and cigarette packs are locked in a glass case behind it. This camera has the best view of the glass doors that open into the parking lot.

Camera Two faces the merchandise. A large partition of wire shelves and hooks divides the store into two main aisles with refrigerated units covering two walls. A small coffee bar is in the far left corner, opposite the cash register.

08:23:03 – Two unidentified customers, one male and one female, stand in line at the counter. There is one cashier on duty, who has since been identified as eighteen-year-old female, Paige Dubre. She is ringing up the man when another individual enters the convenience store. This person is identified as eighteen-year-old female, Rowan Baker.

08:23:46 – Rowan wanders through the aisles. She begins browsing the chip options but does not take anything yet. Her movements are slow and methodical; she knows she’s on camera and wants to keep her motion clear. Rowan’s eyes flick up from the aisles and peer directly into the camera for a moment, then she turns swiftly away.

08:25:11 – Rowan is now in the toiletry section. She holds a notebook and pencil and appears deep in thought.

08:25:56 – Paige finalizes the unidentified woman’s transaction, leaving Paige and Rowan alone in the storeroom. She looks to Rowan with a pitying frown. Another customer, a man identified as Gregory Manson, enters the store and diverts Paige’s attention for the time being.

08:29:38 – Rowan has now circled the aisles three times without picking up a single item. She is currently in the far right corner by the chilled beverages. Paige’s face turns to one of concern. She looks around the room and decides to leave the counter. Though facing away from the room, Rowan seems to hear Paige approach and turns to see her.

8:31:20 – There are no microphones on the security cameras, and the picture quality is not high enough to lip-read what Paige and Rowan are discussing. From Rowan’s demeanor, it can be gleaned that she is uncomfortable with the conversation. She holds her arms close to her chest, and she keeps eyeing around Paige as though searching for a way out. Paige, on the other hand, appears giddy and chatty. She gesticulates as she speaks and is dominating the conversation.

08:33:52 – Paige picks up a few items from the shelf: granola, deodorant, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and jerky. While still speaking to Rowan, she guides them both back to the register where Paige rings up the order. Paige then swipes her own card and pays for the haul. Rowan rifles through her backpack, but Paige urges her to calm down. She hands Rowan the now-purchased merchandise with a smile, then reaches into her pocket. In her hand is a piece of paper, maybe a pamphlet. Rowan declines, however, takes what Paige paid for, and leaves.
